I love playing with cotton yarn, especially Bernat Handicrafter yarn. This is probably because this is the first yarn I ever used (little knitting project). And let me warn you right there: I have a lot of it. When I say a lot, it is a lot … translation for the non-yarn lover : probably more than 30 pounds of it. Love it. Plain and simple. Why ? I don’t know, I just do !
Ok.J’aime jouer avec le fil de coton, en particulier le coton Bernat Handicrafter. C’est probablement parce que c’est le premier fil que j’ai jamais utilisé (petit projet de tricot). Et laissez-moi vous avertir tout de suite : j’en ai beaucoup. Quand je dis beaucoup, c’est beaucoup… traduction pour le non amateur de fil et laine : probablement plus de 15 kilos. Je l’adore ça. Tout simplement. Pourquoi ? Je ne sais pas, c’est comme ça !
Note: The manufacturer, Yarnspirations, produces this yarn under 2 brands. The first one, Handicrafter, is mainly intended for the Canadian market and the second one, Lily Sugar’n Cream is intented for the United States of Americas. It is the same yarn under two different packaging. Most of the colors are the same, but some colors can be found only in one of the brands. I have both of the brands and use them interchangeably. Le premier, Handicrafter, est principalement destiné au marché canadien et le deuxième, Lily Sugar’n Cream est destiné pour les États-Unis d’Amériques. Crochet | skill level: EASY
Yarn:
1 ball of Worsted yarn Bernat Handicrafter – color Hippi Main Color (MC)
1 ball of Worsted yarn Bernat Handicrafter – color Hot Blue Contrast A
Hook: 5.0 mm (H-8) or hook size needed to obtain tension.
Gauge: 6 st and 12 rows = 4×4 inches [10×10 cm] in pattern (spider).
Needle: Tapestry needle needed to weave ends.
Measurements: If you use the same yarn, the dishcloth will measure 7 x 7 inches, unwashed [18 x 18 cm]
Care instruction: The washcloths can handle machine washing and dryer. However, the colors may fade over time. The more you use them and wash/dry them, the softer and absorbent they will become. Please allow the items to dry between each daily use to let them dry.
Note: I personally use only 3 drops of bleach mixed with a cup of water in the washing machine once in a while to sanitize them, along with rags, towels etc (make sure not to put any other items in the wash). Do not put bleach directly in the washing machine or the bleach dispenser but mix it with water.
Abbreviations (US terminology):
- ch = chain stitch
- sc = single crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
- spider = (sc, ch, sc)
- rs = right side
- sk = skip
- sl st = slip stitch
- sp = space
- st = stitch
Instructions:
SPIDER: sc, ch, sc in the same ch sp (of the row below), except the first row where they are worked in a ch.
Note for the first row: In this pattern, the first row is worked through, not only the top loop of the chain, but from both the top loop and the back-ridge loop. For more information, consult my blog post at:
Note: the first 2 ch at the beginning of each row do not count as a stitch.
Body:
With MC ch 21.
Row 1: (rs). sk 2, *spider in next ch, sk 1 ch*, repeat * to * end of row until 1 ch left, sc in ch. Turn. (9 spiders and 1sc).
Row 2: ch 2, *sk 2 sc, spider in next ch sp*, repeat * to * end of row, sc in second turning ch. Turn. (9 spiders and 1sc).
Row 3-19: repeat row 2. (9 spiders and 1sc). Fasten off. Cut MC at 4 inches.
Edging:
First corner: (RS). Join A with sl st to top right corner. [Ch 1, hdc, sc] in corner, space 9 spider st on the top edge, [sc, hdc, sc] in next corner, space 8 spider st in left edge, [sc, hdc, sc] in 3rd corner, space 9 spider st in bottom edge, [sc, hdc, sc] in 4th corner, space 8 spider st in last edge, sc in 1st corner, sl st in first hdc (or invisible join). Fasten off. Cut A at 4 inches.
Weave in ends with tapestry needle.
